Markets

Last Updated: 4 December 2024

There are a variety of markets across the district offering a wide range of items. We manage the indoor and outdoor markets in Kendal and Ulverston, all other markets in South Lakeland are run independently.

Kendal markets

Kendal’s Market Charter dates back to 1189 and markets are a major part of the town’s heritage. The outdoor market is held every Wednesday and Saturday at the heart of the town centre on the historic Market Place.

The Indoor Market Hall is inside the Westmorland Shopping Centre, with the main entrance to the building on the Market Place. Both the Market Place and the Market Hall are a short walk from the town’s main multi-storey car park and bus station on Blackhall Road.

Kendal Market Hall refurbishment

The Indoor Market Hall is set to undergo a major refurbishment and will be closed from December 1 2024 until April 2025 at the earliest. The project will include a refit and redecoration of the interior, with new stalls and café infrastructure, more seating and improvements to the roof alongside innovative decarbonisation measures.

As part of the project, we undertook a series of public engagement sessions in the Market Hall during October 2024, where market users could speak to us about what they would like to see from their new indoor market. This feedback will help us shape the design of the new Market Hall and how the indoor market will operate going forward. The engagement report from these sessions can be read here: Kendal Indoor Market Hall Engagement Report October 2024 (PDF , 415KB)

We have had a lot of interest from prospective and existing traders for the newly refurbished market hall, and are therefore currently inviting expressions of interest from those who would like to become a trader in the refurbished Market Hall in 2025. To submit an expression of interest please complete the Kendal Indoor Market Hall Expressions of Interest Form (DOC , 84KB)

Please return your completed form to kendalmarket@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk no later than 31 January 2025. Expression of interest forms can also be collected from and returned to the reception at Kendal Town Hall.
