Coastline

Last Updated: 3 April 2024

South Lakeland has approximately 60km of coastline within Morecambe Bay and the Duddon Estuary.

We are responsible for our own defences along with:

  • Environment Agency
  • Network Rail
  • private landowners

Our primary role is to monitor the coastline and make sure future developments are suitably located. We also maintain existing sea defence structures which we are responsible for.

Before carrying out work on sea defences landowners must seek approval from us and the Environment Agency.

National coastal erosion risk mapping

Interactive coastal erosion maps for the North West have been published by the Environment Agency. This is part of a joint project with local authorities to help people understand whether coastal erosion could be an issue for their area and will help to inform decisions about planning, living and working on the coastline.
